Geyser and “Geysir”

The word geyser is derived from the name of one of the spouting hot springs of Iceland and means something that erupts or spouts up in the air.

The great Geysir is a specific type of hot spring where superheated underground water rises in a cylinder-like void to reach the critical point between pressure and temperature leading to rapid expansion of the water, resulting in a steam explosion blowing the column of boiling water up to 30-35 meters in the air.

Nowadays active geysers are only found in one particular place in southern Iceland; the Geysir area.

This geyser spouts boiling water to as height of approximately 25 to 30 meters. Our Golden Circle Tour will stop at the Geysir site with plenty of time to explore the hot springs and view several eruptions of Strokkur.
