In late afternoon we arrive at the mountain hut at Hveravellir where we overnight in a sleeping bag accommodation.
Hveravellir is a high temperature, geothermal area with many beautiful hot springs surrounded with mountains and glaciers. It lies between the Langjökull glacier and Hofsjökull glacier on the ancient highland route Kjölur.
After this long exciting day we will have a nice barbeque before our relaxing bath in the natural hot spring just outside the mountain hut. Nothing compares to lying in the natural hot pool on a winter night, gazing at the countless stars and with some luck the northern lights will also be visible.
We start our tour from Reykjavik heading towards the west coast of Iceland. This is a very interesting route up to the glacier because on the way we see fjords, mountains, lava fields, hot springs and waterfalls.
Once we are at the glacier the real expedition begins. We drive on the glacier up to 1100 meters (3000 ft.) above sea level and then we cruise some 15 km before we go down to the side of the glacier to explore ice caves.
After we have admired the ice caves for a while we continue to cross over the icecap. On a clear day we have impressive visibility over the vast ice and snow fields.

After Gullfoss we’ll explore the geothermal area around Geysir where you can see the geysers erupt every few minutes.
The ancient Kjölur route, is one of the two main routes used to cross the highlands from north to south.
This road has been travelled by Icelanders for hundreds of years, often in very bad weather and experiencing much hardship. There are many stories of heroism and the courage of those who crossed the highlands via Kjölur in the old days.
We are heading south towards the famous waterfall Gullfoss where we can approach close to the precipice on the surrounding cliffs.
On our way back to Reykjavik we will stop in the hot springs town of Hveragerði before ascending to the Hellisheiði plateau on our way back to Reykjavík. We are back in Reykjavik in the late evening.
We’ll say goodbye to the mountain hut and hot pool, heading off into the highlands.
