A high-content combination of two classic South Iceland daytrips. Thingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss in the morning, in the afternoon, across the mountain track to Þjórsárdalur. Includes Háifoss, one of Iceland most spectacular waterfall sights. Finally Þjórsárdalur with our choice of Stöng, Hjálparfoss, Gjáin, Þjóðveldisbær and/or other great sights. Overnight in the Þjórsárdalur area.
Sydra Fjallabak is an old route from east to west offering magnificence, weather regardless. We take the haunting Sydra Fjallabak route behind Mýrdalsjökull glacier, across Mælifellssandur outwash plains, and of course the Öldufell alternative route towards civilisation. Overnight in the Kirkjubaejarklaustur area for 2 nights.
Amongst todays attractions: Núpsstaður, Skaftafell National Park amble including Svartifoss. Svínafellsjökull glacier, possibly with ice cave, it changes constantly. For actually walking on a glacier tongue, crampons are needed and available, if you want. Unique Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon included. Overnight in the Kirkjubæjarklaustur area.
An easy day with opportunities to walk and gawk in the colourful Marsscapes of Fjallabak route. Bathing in the warm natural pools of Landmannalaugar is a must for any real Iceland visitor.
From Hrauneyjar into the Sprengisandur interior wastelands. At Nýidalur, we turn to the Gæsavatnaleið route, to Askja, where we hike and take an optional bath in the sulphurous Víti crater. Overnight in Drekagil mountain hut by Askja with further hiking opportunities. In mountain huts like in Drekagil we sleep on mattresses (supplied) in sleeping bags.
Leaving Askja we can traverse truly surreal landscapes to Kverkfjöll. A short hike will take us to the famous Kverkfjöll ice caves. Optional drive to and observation of the controversial Kárahnjúkar dam. Overnight in the new Möðrudalur á Fjöllum turfroofed farm accommodation, or Grímstunga.
Dettifoss, Ásbyrgi and maybe more of Jökulsárgljúfur national park. Around Tjörnes peninsula or across it from Kelduhverfi over Reykjaheiði to Húsavík (nice primitive track). Perhaps ascent of Húsavíkurfjall for wideranging views over Skjálfandi Bay and more. Whale watching is available Overnight in Húsavík area.
Mývatn area exploration, including a good look at Krafla caldera, and any other places of interest of our choice. In Akureyri you then have free time (botanical gardens, shops...) including the evening (that great hot pool complex is open late). Dinner not included, choose your favourite restaurant. Overnight in Akureyri.
Akureyri to Strandir in the morning. Maybe we could take in North Strandir, a haunting (and perennially haunted), largely depopulated, and tourist-free seascape, smothered in Siberian driftwood and home to a huge population of ghosts. Overnight in Kirkjuból or Laugarhóll.
To Barðaströnd, the south coast of the West Fjords. Great things on the way to Látrabjarg cliffs (yellow sand beaches, a warm pool or two, great views, the Hnjótur museum), and time to take it in as we stay in a guesthouse nearby. Overnight in Breiðavík or the Bíldudalur area.
Fishing townships of Patreksfjörður and Tálknafjörður, with an excellent geothermal swimming pool. Fish for our lunch or dinner off the harbour piers. High point is Selárdalur in Arnarfjörður, a deserted valley at “the end of the world”. A ferry takes us to Flatey island or Stykkishólmur, with dinner aboard the ferry. Overnight in Flatey or Stykkishólmur.
In the morning a boat takes us to Stykkishólmur (if we stay in Flatey), followed by checking the Snæfellsnes peninsula and national park. We choose from bountiful visual riches, fishing villages Grundarfjörður and Ólafsvík on the north side perhaps, maybe Öndverðarnes, Djúpalónssandur, Hellnar, Arnarstapi, or Búðir on the south side.
A breather in the city before packing up and going home to process your mountains of memories. Additions available by request.
“I love this trip. Having guided year round for over a decade for most Icelandic travel organizers leading all kinds of journeys, all over Iceland, I´ll tell it to you straight: Never in my career have I had a multi-day program this good to work with. Simple as that. Maximum customer pleasure has always been the goal, on this trip elation is practically guaranteed. I think this is the best worked-out Iceland itinerary in the 12 day range. It´ll be real hard to beat.”
