We start bright and early on our first day, climbing the Úlfarsfell mountain with our Super Jeep for a great view over the capital area, on our way to Thingvellir National park, Geysir and Gullfoss waterfall. We’ll explore lava caves and learn about the dramatic geology that has shaped Iceland.
After enjoying lunch in the charming little village of Laugarvatn, it is time to be taken river rafting by experienced instructors in the Hvíta river. All equipment, safety gear and clothing is provided. After our river fun we head down through the valleys to our home for the next 3 nights at Hotel Hekla.
A feast for the eye, we advance through the spectacular landscape passing incredible lava fields and colourful mountains all the way to Landmannalaugar for an inspiring two hour hike, before the unique experience of a hot bath out in the natural hot springs.
From the hotel we have great views to the two famous volcanoes Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull. Today we are headed up to Hekla for a hike up to the craters; the one we are going up to is called the red bowl. After our climb there we will break for a beautiful picnic lunch out in the nature.
Next up is Thórsmörk, named after the Norse god Thor. Thórsmörk richly deserves its reputation as the “Valley of the Gods” and is one of Iceland’s favorite travel locations. Crossing rivers in our SuperJeep, we will see where the floods from the Eyjafjallajökull crater came down in 2010.
We start the day driving through the charming towns of Hella and Hvolsvöllur, home to the Saga Centre dedicated to Njál’s saga. Seljalandsfoss is a stunning waterfall, where we will stop and walk up into the recess behind the thundering torrent of water.
We will lunch in Vík a charming willage on the south shore near Reynisdrangar. You will see the spectacular Dyrhólaey where you might be able to see puffins. As we head back west towards Hótel Rangá, we ride off-road on the lava beaches looking for seals and treasures.
Today we are going ice walking on Solheimajökull glacier and exploring the vast black sandy beaches of the south shore of Iceland. We’ll visit Skógar school settlement, nestled under a mountain ridge topped by the glacier, and walk up close to the powerful Skógafoss waterfall, which is often circled by rainbow on sunny days.
On our last day we head back to Reykjavík with a hiking option from Hveragerdi up to Reykjadalur, a beautiful 3-4 hour long hike up to a geothermal valley where we can take a relaxing bath in a naturally hot river.
Finally we return to the capital, Reykjavik, where you can enjoy an evening with all that the sparkle that city has to offer - shopping, monuments, art, spas, restaurants and legendary nightlife.
We will hike along trails and into river canyons in this idyllic park setting, then explore the magnificent canyon of Stakkaholtsgjá, which makes for a great hike. After a picnic lunch, we head back for riding in the beautiful countryside with Iceland’s famously hardy breed of horse.
