Hveravellir geothermal high temperature area, this is where we are staying for the night in one of the huts there. www.hveravellir.is
Hveravellir is a high temperature, geothermal area with many beautiful hot springs surrounded with mountains and glaciers. It lies between the Langjökull glacier and Hofsjökull glacier on the ancient highland route Kjölur.
After this long exciting day we will have a nice barbeque before our relaxing bath in the natural hot spring just outside the mountain hut. Nothing compares to lying in the natural hot pool on a winter night, gazing at the countless stars and with some luck the northern lights will also be visible.
Transport by car to our starting point Tungufell, a farm located 140 KM east of Reykjavík
After preparing we start our tour and head in to the Mountains, we take our first lunch stop somewhere near Bláfell. The first two hours we are headed towards the colorful rhyolite mountains Kerlingarfjöll, as we get near them fantastic view opens over the Hofsjökull Glacier.
On the eastern side of the Kerlingarfjöll mountains we will explore a huge canyon which we can drive far in to. After we have almost circled these beautiful mountains it is time for a break before we take the last kilometers to Hveravellir.

This notorious track is called Stórisandur (the big sand) it leads us north of the Glacier Langjökull towards Arnarvastnsheidi.
After a long strenuous ride over the big sand, which actually has very big sand particles, we advance down in altitude and suddenly we start to smell the lush vegetation around Arnarvatn (Eagle Lake).
This is an astonishingly good fishing area, the Langjökull Glacier dominates the horizon as well as the table mountain Eiríksjökull Glacier, perfect for us to try to get some fresh trout for the evening. We will stay in one of the huts used by the farmers when they round up their sheep.
After our enjoyable stay in Hveravellir our heading is first north about 18 KM on the Kjölur route. Then we make a turn to the north west and we will drive the worst possible track found in Iceland
•Participants have to be relatively fit and bring their own personal protective gear, boots, jackets, pants, kidney belts and etc.
•Note: If you bring your own fishing equipment it has to be disinfected before your arrival in Iceland.
•All Gear can also be rented from Mountain Taxi if necessary.

We have to refuel our ATV in Húsafell before we head south over Kaldidalur ( the cold valley). Once we are there we have the option to take the very old part of the route, about 20km, this part is only passable on ATV, dirt bikes or on foot.
This was the first mountain road ever made in Iceland in the 19th century. The other option is to drive all the way up to the Langjökull Glacier and explore the ice.
In the late afternoon we end our trip in the Laugarvatn area after a incredible journey on the roughest trails found in Iceland.
We continue our tour heading west towards the valleys of Borgarfjörður, on the way we have to cross a big river so it’s going to be exciting.
