We will drive our super jeeps up onto the glacier where they are really in their element for an amazing vantage point to survey the immense vastness of the second largest glacier in Iceland covering 950km2 of land with ice
We continue north and then west with a planned stop at Surtshellir or another nearby stunning lava caves. In the olden days these were inhabited by outlaws. From inside the cave you´ll be able to see how the lava was flowing and the fascinating formations as it cooled.
Next we visit the scenic Hraunfossar waterfalls cascading into the glacial river Hvita from beneath the tree covered lava fields. One of the most beautiful sights of West Iceland.
Our day starts with your expert driver and guide welcoming you onboard one of our special Mountain Taxi super jeeps.
We’ll collect you from your hotel or place of stay in Iceland at 09:00.
Our first stop is Thingvellir National Park, home of Iceland´s ancient parliament, situated at the dramatic divide between the continental plates of North America and EuroAsia, where the 9000 year old lava field splits apart. A unique opportunity to stand with one foot on each continent.
We head north to one of Iceland´s highest and most austere interior roads, called Kaldidalur (The Cold Valley). Kaldidalur runs along the western side of the Langjökull glacier where we will stop with an opportunity for a unique encounter with mother nature.
We head to the historic site of Reykholt, home of Iceland´s famous chieftain and historian Snorri Sturluson. It is at this sight that Snorri compiled some of the great earlier literature of Iceland´s famous saga age. Snorri met his end at the hands of his enemies near this hot springs hot pot.
We then head on to Deildartunguhver, the largest and most powerful hot springs in the Northern Hemisphere. This source supplies hot water for much of western Iceland´s heating needs.
In the afternoon we head back south toward Reykjavik, enjoying the scenic Hvalfjordur fjord (“Whale Fjord”) with its stunning combination of natural contrasts. This fjord was the deep water harbour and forming up point for naval convoys during the Second World War.
During the winter this route can be altered so that instead of driving through Kaldidalur and Þingvellir we will head back from the glacier through the small town of Borgarnes and via the underground tunnel in Hvalfjörður.
•Lunch stop at 13:00 approx. A picnic lunch is included. At your option and subject to seasonal opening, we may stop at a country restaurant. The cost of lunch at restaurants is not included.
•Complimentary soft drinks and light refreshments are provided en route.
•Passengers may bring their own refreshments.
